Glencore has had a presence in Colombia since 1995 and started producing coal in 2004. Since our arrival in Colombia we have contributed to the local and national economies, supported the socio-economic development of the region in which we operate and promoted respect of human rights.
We condemn the armed conflict that has troubled Colombia since the mid-1960s. Extremist illegal groups have tormented the Cesar province and have impeded its socio-economic development. Many of our own employees have been victims of, or impacted by, the violence. We welcome the steps taken by the government to demilitarise these groups and recognise and welcome the Colombian government’s continuing efforts to broker a peace agreement with FARC, the oldest and largest left-wing Colombian guerrilla.
