Today, Prodeco is Colombia’s third largest exporter of thermal coal, producing over 17 million tonnes of coal each year, around 22% of Colombia’s total production. Prodeco’s assets include open-pit coal mining facilities in Calenturitas and La Jagua, and Puerto Nuevo, an export port in Ciénaga. In addition, Prodeco has a 39.76% stake in Fenoco SA, the owner of the rail concession that links our mines to our port.
Since acquiring Prodeco, Glencore has invested over $2 billion in developing and improving the assets, including the construction of a world-class coal loading facility at Puerto Nuevo. Prodeco currently employs around 6,000 people.
We manage our operations to the highest international standards. We have in place effective leadership, well-defined operational standards and a safety system that encourages and promotes safe working practices. These measures have delivered a strong safety performance; Prodeco has seen no fatalities since 2011 and has a global industry-leading lost time injury rate of 0.06 incidents per million hours worked.
In Colombia, Glencore also holds a one-third stake in Cerrejón, a joint venture with Anglo American and BHP Billiton that is independently managed. Further information on Cerrejón is available on their website.
