Koniambo Nickel SAS (KNS), our affiliate company developing the Koniambo nickel project, collaborated with the Government of New Caledonia and the Université de la Nouvelle-Calédonie to develop a Mines and Geology Diploma programme targeting local residents. The programme aimed to provide a focused curriculum and hands-on training leading to employment as geological technicians and mining operation supervisors at the nickel project currently under construction in New Caledonia.
We selected 14 applicants, aged 20 to 40, to participate in the nine-month training programme. Students received a combination of university coursework and practical training in mine operations. The core curriculum included approximately 30 hours of coursework per week. Students also had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience during training exercises in handling mining machinery and mastering mining geology techniques at local mining companies and the quarrying and mining trade school.
All 14 students successfully completed the programme and were immediately offered a contract of employment by KNS or Société Le Nickel.
Koniambo is working to launch a similar diploma programme in energy and production to train 21 students for positions as technicians in the operations and maintenance crews at the Vavouto thermal power plant.
