We developed the Glencore risk management framework for use across the Group in 2013; it is applied by our assets. The framework is aligned with international standards and provides a standardised approach to managing our health, safety, environment, community and reputational risks, as well as those linked to the management of financial and legal issues.

Risk management framework

Our assets use this framework to identify hazards, particularly those with potentially major or catastrophic consequences. It is also the basis on which they develop plans to address and eliminate, or mitigate, related risks. Management tools such as protocols, training packages, software and reporting processes are available. We require assets to develop protocols for addressing hazards that could cause fatalities.

Identifying fatal/catastrophic hazards

In 2015, we continued implementation of our SafeWork fatal hazard protocols, and focused our efforts on identifying all catastrophic hazards across the Group. These form the basis of the Group HSEC assurance process.

In 2017, our assurance processes continue to concentrate on assessing catastrophic hazard management at the majority of our underground mines and assets with high-risk tailings storage facilities.
