Glencore Coal SA receives global D&I certification from EDGE MOVE®
In addition to scooping the Gender Parity Award at the World 50 Impact Awards 2025, Glencore Coal South Africa (GCSA) moved another step forward on issues of diversity and inclusion having participated in a global Diversity and Inclusion certification process with EDGE.
Founded in 2009, the EDGE Certified Foundation is the custodian behind EDGE Certification, the leading standards for workplace diversity, fairness, and inclusion, centered on a gender and intersectional equity approach.
EDGE® Certification has three levels for binary gender assessments: EDGE Assess (recognizing commitment), EDGE Move (demonstrating progress) and EDGE Lead (celebrating success).
EDGEplus expands on this by looking at gender intersectionality, and in the GCSA's case, they were assessed for how they deal with the intersection of gender, race and disability.
During the assessment of their workforce statistics, the effectiveness of policies and employee views (from the survey conducted with the People Survey in 2024) were assessed.
We are proud to have followed on the footsteps of Cerrejón who also achieved EDGE Certification towards the end of 2024 and became the first mining Company in the world to achieve this.
By achieving the EDGE Plus Certification, we have demonstrated our intersectional approach to workplace equity that supports employees from diverse backgrounds and experiences, said Sisi Mahobe - Head of HR in Coal SA.
About EDGE® Certification and EDGEplus certified seal - What does it stand for?
EDGE stands for Equity, Diversity, and Gender Equality. EDGE® Certification is the global standard for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, with a focus on gender and intersectional equity in the workplace. It is based on objective and measurable evidence of an organization's intersectional gender equity, audited by an independent entity, to ensure the integrity and credibility of the data. This provides organizations with a powerful way to demonstrate their commitment to and performance in equity and inclusion.
The EDGE certification system is based on four key pillars: representation, pay equity, effectiveness of policies and practices, and inclusion. It evaluates statistics, policies, practices and employee perceptions against these standards, and requires an action plan to address any identified gaps.
EDGE Move is the second level of certification and showcases progress in workplace gender equity. At the EDGE Move level, the organization has reached the EDGE Global Standards in some of the assessed areas. EDGE Move Certification indicates that the organization has not only made a commitment to gender equity but has taken concrete steps to transform that commitment into action. EDGE Move showcases this commitment, while giving organizations further support as they progress their diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy.
EDGEplus Certification showcases the organization’s public commitment towards assessing intersectional equity. EDGEplus Certification means that additional dimensions of diversity beyond gender binary were included in the analysis, such as race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, working with a disability, nationality, and age. By recognizing the importance of analyzing different dimensions of diversity, the organization is paving the way for a more intersectional approach to workplace equity that that supports employees from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
EDGE® Certification is distinguished by its rigorous approach and emphasis on impact and is valid for two years. For more details, visit EDGE Certified Organizations.
