Glencore statement regarding Rhovan Operations Road Blockages
Glencore Ferroalloys confirms that protesters in Bethanie continue to unlawfully block the offramp from the R556 road leading to its Rhovan Operations. This access and another access road have been blocked and the Rhovan Operation has consequently been closed since 29April 2024.
Glencore has engaged with various provincial and local governments, unions, the regulator, and community representatives. The company has also obtained a court order against the protestors, that directs the South African Police Services (SAPS) to prevent criminal conduct being perpetrated on the roads to the Rhovan Operations. This has to date not resulted in the removal of the protesters.
Glencore has confirmed its willingness to engage with representatives of the protesters once the protesters have dispersed, the roads reopened, and the operations resumed.
Glencore is assessing the impact of the disruptions on an ongoing basis and will engage with interested and affected parties as may be required and appropriate.
Glencore Ferroalloys will continue to work with all affected stakeholders and authorities to come to a peaceful solution and affirms its commitment to uphold human rights and the law.
