The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Program Engineer (Mechanical or Structural) to join our Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations.
The position will be based in Greater Sudbury (Falconbridge), Ontario.
This is a full-time, permanent, staff position.
This position is being posted to fill an existing vacancy.
Work location is not accessible by public transportation.
Duties and Accountabilities:
Reporting to Superintendent Smelter and Mill Engineering, the Program Engineer is responsible and accountable for the assessment, design, planning, cost estimating and control, document control, project management, construction, commissioning, and close-out of work requiring the application of engineering principles
This role is responsible for leading multi-discipline projects for strategic capital/operational investments in the operation or managing new process development activities. The incumbent provides leadership and direction to the professional and technical staff at the site.
Other specific accountabilities include:
- Manages a portfolio of operating and sustaining capital projects.
- Identifies and completes process, equipment and systems upgrades/replacement, environmental and hygiene improvement projects and champions capital/operational work in the same areas.
- Develops project procedures, technical specifications, tender documents, bid evaluations, and commissioning procedures for engineering construction projects, and oversees their deployment.
- Leads process and equipment troubleshooting.
- Participates in short and long-range planning.
- Makes independent decision on work methods and procedures within an overall program. Originality and ingenuity are required for devising practical and economical solutions to problems.
- Independently conceives programs and problems to be investigated. Leads the evaluation and implementation of specific projects and programs.
- Assigned problems make it necessary to modify or create guidelines, devise new approaches, apply existing criteria in new manners and draw conclusions from comparative situations.
- Direct and sustained supervision of other professional engineers.
- Leads a team (including engineers) in the design of projects or in the provision of engineering services to various small projects.
- Safety - must ensure that the specific project has a developed safety strategy to ensure project safety targets are achieved.
- Participates and facilitates in project risk management such as initiating risk reviews and job hazard assessments.
- Develops project safety plans and performs field safety audits.
- Performs various field observations and prescribed audits on Glencore’s Fatal Hazards.
The role works closely with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, and project stakeholders to ensure projects are effectively managed through all stages of development and execution.

Education and Skills
The role requires a university degree in an Engineering (Mechanical or Structural) discipline and a minimum of 10 years of experience in an industrial environment. Candidates must be registered members of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and possess strong communication, leadership, and negotiation skills, along with demonstrated experience supervising engineering personnel and leading change within an operation.
