Glencore Ferroalloys Champion Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) with Community Awareness Day in Steelpoort
September 2024 - Glencore Ferroalloys hosted its first Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) Community Awareness Day at the Glencore Local Economic Development Hub in Steelpoort, Limpopo. The event aimed to showcase the latest in digital transformation and innovation, offering the local community a unique opportunity to engage with cutting edge technologies and skill development programmes.
The concept for the 4IR Community Awareness Day emerged from Glencore's recognition of the evolving landscape of industry and technology. As the global economy increasingly relies on digital technologies, the need to prepare local communities for this shift became clear. This initiative aims to ensure that local communities are not only aware of but also equipped to thrive in a world where technology plays a pivotal role.

Andre Wiesner Group Human Resource Development at Glencore Ferroalloys emphasised the importance of introducing local communities to 4IR skills, stating, "It is crucial for our local communities to be exposed to the technologies and skills of 4IR. As our mines and smelters evolve, they will not be around forever. However, the skills we impart today will endure for generations to come. Equipping our community with these advanced skills ensures that they are prepared to thrive in an ever-changing, technology-driven world. This initiative is about more than just current industry needs, it's about preparing future generations for success."
The exhibitions not only highlighted these technologies but also provided hands-on experiences and interactive demonstrations. Participants gained insight into how these innovations can be leveraged to create new career opportunities and drive future growth.
"This initiative represents a significant step in aligning educational opportunities with today's job market demands. Introducing our community to 4IR technologies and skills not only improves their current job prospects but also equips them with essential knowledge needed to advance," said Madikgake Masha, Ngwaabe Circuit Manager from the Department of Education.
In addition to Glencore's portable skills programme, which underscores traditional skills, the exhibition also showcased how the mining sector is evolving and advancing the adaptability and safety for its employees.
Vorster Maloka, CSI Manager for Eastern Limb Operation, added that this first inaugural community day reflects the strong interest from community members. Looking ahead, Glencore plans to collaborate not only with its Western Limb Operation but also with other surrounding mines to expand its outreach and enhance its impact within the community.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution Community Awareness Day stands as a testament to Glencore's commitment to supporting local development and fostering a future-ready workforce.
