Transforming futures through robotics and digital innovation
The World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) is a collaborative education initiative between Glencore and TechnoLab, a division of the University of Johannesburg’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, aimed at strengthening digital literacy and problem-solving skills among learners in communities near our operations in Rustenburg. Hosted at Kloofview Primary School, the programme brought together nine local primary schools and builds on a successful 2024 pilot that introduced learners and educators to coding, robotics and applied technology.
Designed to equip both teachers and learners with practical, future-ready skills, the initiative provided comprehensive educator training alongside robotics kits, tablets and learning resources for participating schools. The championship-style format encouraged hands-on learning, collaboration and creative thinking, while highlighting the role of technology in expanding opportunities for entrepreneurship and economic participation.
This initiative reflects Glencore’s commitment to youth development, strong partnerships and sustainable community empowerment, opening pathways for young learners to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
