 Kamoto Copper Company Société Anonyme, KCC SA in acronym, is a Congolese company operating in Kolwezi, capital of the province of Lualaba, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

KCC SA exploits copper and cobalt ores on a large scale. It includes an underground mine, open-pit mines and integrated metallurgical facilities. The operation has one of the largest copper reserves in the world, with a current life of over 25 years.

Job Description

 

Reporting directly to the GM Capital Projects - Processing, the incumbent will be responsible for the overall leadership, development, and implementation of the project controls and project management office (PMO) functions within the copper mining operation. This role is pivotal in ensuring that projects are executed efficiently, within budget, and on schedule. The incumbent will establish and maintain robust project controls systems and processes, provide strategic guidance to project teams, and deliver accurate and timely reporting to senior management. Ultimately, the role contributes significantly to the overall success of the mining operation by optimizing project performance and maximizing return on investment.

 

 

He/She will have, among other things, the following essential functions (non-exhaustive list):

 

 

Project Controls:

 

  • Develop and implement comprehensive project controls frameworks, methodologies, and standards aligned with industry best practices.
  • Establish and maintain a centralized project database and information management system.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of project schedules, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Conduct regular project performance analysis and reporting, including earned value management (EVM) and variance analysis.
  • Identify and manage project risks, developing mitigation plans and contingency measures.

 

PMO

  • Establish and lead a high-performing PMO team responsible for supporting project delivery.
  • Develop and implement project management standards, templates, and guidelines.
  • Provide project management training and coaching to project teams.
  • Facilitate project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure.
  • Coordinate resource allocation and management across projects.
  • Monitor project progress and identify potential issues or risks.

 

Strategic Leadership.

  • Develop and implement a project controls and PMO strategy aligned with the overall business objectives.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation within the project controls function.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Represent the project controls and PMO function in internal and external forums.

 

Budget and Resource Management.

Develop and Manage Budgets:

  • Budget Creation: Prepare detailed budgets for backfill projects, including estimates for materials, labor, equipment, and other costs. Ensure that budgets align with overall project goals and financial constraints.
  • Cost Management: Track actual expenditures against the budget, identifying and addressing any discrepancies. Implement cost-saving measures where possible and report on financial performance.

Optimize Resource Allocation:

  • Resource Planning: Develop plans for the efficient use of resources, including scheduling equipment and personnel to avoid conflicts and ensure availability.
  • Efficiency Improvements: Continuously seek ways to optimize resource utilization, reduce waste, and improve operational efficiency.

Monitor Expenditures and Prepare Financial Reports:

  • Expense Tracking: Monitor and document all expenditures related to backfill projects, ensuring accuracy and accountability.

 

 

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications and experience.

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance, or project management.
  • PMP or PRINCE2 certification preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in project management software (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project).
  • Certification in Mine Safety (e.g., MSHA) or equivalent.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar certification is an advantage.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in project controls and PMO roles within a complex mining or industrial environment.
  • Proven track record of successful project delivery through effective project controls.
  • Experience in developing and implementing project controls systems and processes.
  • Experience in leading and mentoring project controls teams.
  • Proven experience in project management within the mining industry, including managing large-scale backfill projects.
  • Experience in both open-pit and underground mining environments is highly desirable.

 

 

Technical skills.

 

  • Advanced proficiency in project management software (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project).
  • Strong financial modeling and analysis skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI).
  • Knowledge of ERP systems (e.g., SAP) and integration with project controls systems.
  • Understanding of mining operations and related project complexities.
  • Strong understanding of risk management methodologies and tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate teams.
