Job Description

 

Reporting to the Manager – Production Surface Mining, the Senior Advisor - Surface Mining position is focused on building capacity within the national mining superintendent and supervisory levels through acting as a coach and role model.  The role advises management and enables the line to deliver excellence in safe and efficient execution of surface mining operations to realise and surpass surface mining commitments. 

The Senior Advisor - Surface Mining Production is accountable for identifying superintendent and supervisory knowledge gaps and correcting poor operating practices, advising line management of the corrective actions required, implementing those corrective actions and delivering practical interventions. The role drives and monitors skills and knowledge development through coaching and mentoring focused on safe production and operating discipline. The Senior Advisor instils knowledge and understanding skills transfer through focus on building the capacity of mentees to enable and sustain best practice in surface mining.

Responsible for performance reporting and documentation; identifies, reports on and advises corrections of variance to plan / process; drives and monitors continuous improvement focused on safety, operability, reliability, value and cost reduction. Delivers practical knowledge and skills transfer through focus on developing the competencies of subordinates, collaborates with embedded trainers to address systemic skills shortages.

 

He/She will have, among other things, the following responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

  •     Manages change and risk through the application of appropriate assessment and quantification process to ensure that personnel, contractors and the business are not subjected to unnecessary risks.
  •       Participates in safety interventions and inspections, identifying and addressing non-compliances, deficiencies and potential hazards.
  •       Promptly addresses and closes out audit actions within or relevant to area of accountability.
  •     Stays abreast of evolving safety expectations regulations and legislation governing mining, ensuring understanding and compliance within area of accountability.

  •        Identifies and pursue opportunities to reduce costs within area of accountability.
  •       Meets reporting timelines and standards including month-end processes.
  •       Maximises synergies to minimise losses, waste, repeat work and unnecessary expenditure.
  •       Comply with company policies, procedures and regulatory standards across areas of accountability.
  •     Undertakes all business in adherence to the company Code of Conduct, Anti-Bribery and Corruption and Fraud prevention policies, procedures and strategies.

Planning & Scheduling

  •       Ensures that plans and schedules are understood. Coaches on aligning activity execution with production commitments.
  •       Critically reviews mining activities and schedules for deficiencies and opportunities.
  •       Coaches on how to understand and apply the mine plan and the supporting and enabling activities required to be effective executed for production targets to be realized.
  •       Coaches on equipment and personnel constraints for validating and executing the mining production plan.
  •       Inspires and influences team members to assume ownership of plan and schedule activities and outcomes.
  •     Enables and coaches on Short Interval Control practice by providing the skills to align tasks and activities to realise opportunities for continuous improvement in terms of efficiency, cost and productivity.

 

Operational Excellence

  •        Demonstrate technical, practical and conceptual excellence in anticipating and addressing risks
  •       Guides mentees and the team to deliver agreed departmental and business goals to ensure the value of the business is maintained and improved.
  •      Establishing and monitoring a competency register identifying skills gaps and recommendations for technical training and leadership development
  •       Coaches to enable:
  •       Planning work execution and allocating resources
  •       Setting priorities and allocating work
  •       Collaborating with business partners and setting up work for execution
  •       Ensuring work is completed to the required quality and specification
  •       Ensuring work is commenced and completed within the required timeframe
  •       Ensuring feedback on all work completed is recorded, including opportunities for improvement
  •       Builds strong relationships with surface mining peers. Is cognizant of mining’s operational commitments and collaborates with peers and leadership to tailor coaching and employee development to deliver those commitments.
  •       Instills a culture of continuous improvement and learning.
  •       Develops understanding in the use of dispatch data and systems to maximise productivity and efficiency in delivering production targets.
  •    Provides guidance on the execution of ancillary and supporting work to enable to schedule delivery of the target ore and waste movement.
  •      Enables operational discipline in the pursuit of safe production.
  •      Positively contributes to the outcomes of the Surface Mining teams through leadership and supervisory development.

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications and experience

  •        Minimum 15 years of experience in open mining operations, with a proven track record in developing subordinates
  •        Proven experience in executing mining operations in high rainfall environments
  •        In-depth knowledge of safety expectations and best practice in surface mining.
