Reaffirming our commitment to promote ethical, safe and responsible business practices

posted: 03/06/2024

Our 2023 Modern Slavery Statement reaffirms our commitment to promote ethical, safe and responsible business practices when managing our industrial assets and in our relationships with our suppliers through our supply chain and procurement programme. This commitment is what we refer to as responsible sourcing.

Our annual Statement captures the responsible sourcing initiatives and progress that we have made during the previous year with reference to international legal frameworks including the UK, Australian and Canadian Modern Slavery Acts and the relevant provisions of the Swiss Code of Obligations.

We take a zero-tolerance approach in our own operations to modern slavery and all its forms of exploitation such as slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour; human trafficking; sexual exploitation and forced marriage; child labour; deceptive recruiting practices; and debt bondage. We work with our suppliers to encourage them to treat people with fairness and respect, to operate safely and responsibly and to act with integrity in line with Glencore’s Values and our Supplier Code of Conduct.

Our progress during 2023:

  • Supplier training: We delivered training on our Supplier Code of Conduct with around 930 suppliers that we identified as being high risk, either because of their location or the type of goods and services that they provide.
  • Successful third-party assessments: Our London Metal Exchange (LME) and/or London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) brand-producing refineries passed assessments to meet those organisations’ responsible sourcing requirements.
  • Successful third-party audits: Our copper and cobalt industrial assets in the Democratic Republic of the Congo passed third-party audits confirming adherence to the Responsible Minerals Initiative's All Minerals Standard.
  • Continuous improvement: We conducted an annual review of our responsible sourcing risk assessment tool, which identifies relevant conflict-affected and high-risk areas (CAHRAs) based on risks relating to human rights, conflict, and governance risks.

We are committed to preventing modern slavery across our supply chain. This statement sets out our commitment to responsible sourcing and the actions we take to identify and mitigate risks relating to modern slavery, child labour and other human rights-related abuses. Going forward, we will continue to work with both our internal and external stakeholders to address the risks associated with modern slavery, child labour and other human rights abuses.
