Kamoto Copper Company welcomes DRC Prime Minister Tuluka
Kamoto Copper Company (KCC), which is jointly owned by Glencore, Gécamines and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) state, recently had the honour of hosting Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka, Head of Government in the DRC, to our operations in Kolwezi.
KCC welcomed the Prime Minister and her delegation of national and provincial government officials and provided an in-depth overview of our copper and cobalt operations. The delegation toured key facilities at KCC to gain a clear understanding of the journey of critical minerals, from extraction at the mine, through processing plants, to the production of final products that advance everyday life.
The visit reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between industry and government to advance responsible and sustainable mining practices in the DRC that can drive long-term value.
Mark Davis, CEO for KCC and Glencore Copper Africa, says: “As the demand for copper and cobalt continues to be strong, the DRC has an important role to play in supplying these critical minerals. We are grateful for the time, engagement and support of Her Excellency and look forward to continued collaboration to help ensure that mining in the DRC can support economic development and deliver lasting benefits for local communities.”
“This was a fantastic opportunity to explain the processes that underpin KCC’s operations, including the steps we’re taking to embed international standards across our operations,” adds President of Glencore DRC and KCC Chairperson, Marie-Chantal Kaninda. “Our recent Copper Mark certification is recognition of our commitment to responsible copper production and it was an honour to be able to demonstrate some of these practices in action.”
The visit to KCC also coincided with this year’s DRC Mining Week, an annual event that brings together businesses, governments and industry stakeholders committed to driving forwards the DRC’s mining sector.
Glencore participated as a platinum sponsor and Marie-Chantal opened the event by sharing her vision for responsible mining in the DRC. She later joined the Women – Mine & Leadership Forum, hosted by Women in Mining, to discuss the impact of mining on women’s lives.
Anne Edwards, Glencore’s Head of Corporate Affairs, delivered a keynote on the role of global assurance frameworks like the Copper Mark in positioning the DRC as a mining model for Africa, while Anne-Marie Fleury, Responsible Sourcing Director Cobalt, took part in a Sustainable Mining Roundtable hosted by the Swiss Business Hub Southern Africa.
