Indigenous Peoples
Our business interacts with many diverse communities around the world. We respect the rights, interests, perspectives and aspirations of Indigenous Peoples and acknowledge their right to maintain their culture, identity, traditions and customs.
Some of our industrial assets are located on or near the traditional lands of Indigenous Peoples. Our approach aligns with the ICMM Position Statement on Indigenous Peoples and Mining, which requires mining projects located on lands traditionally owned by or under customary use of Indigenous Peoples to respect Indigenous Peoples’ rights, interests, special connections to lands and waters, and perspectives.
How do we engage with Indigenous Peoples?
We are focused on meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities, promoting sustainable development, mutual respect, and long-term success.
We adopt and apply engagement and consultation processes that seek to ensure the meaningful participation of Indigenous communities in decision-making that is consistent with their traditional decision-making protocols and governance processes.
Through good faith negotiation, we seek to reach mutually beneficial agreements with affected Indigenous Peoples who have an interest in or connection to the land on which we operate.
What is our approach to resettlement?
We seek to avoid involuntary resettlement wherever possible. Where it is unavoidable, we follow the principles of International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standard 5: Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement.
This approach prioritizes minimizing impacts by engaging affected stakeholders in every phase and supporting the development of long-term productive livelihoods that uphold their well-being and human rights.
Throughout the resettlement process, we are committed to ensuring meaningful participation for all stakeholders. Following resettlement, our ongoing monitoring efforts aim to guarantee that the communities involved are able to sustain productive livelihoods.
How do we work to protect cultural heritage and learn from local knowledge?
We are committed to working with Indigenous Peoples to identify, protect and manage both tangible and intangible cultural heritage that may be affected by our industrial assets. Our industrial assets with cultural heritage responsibilities are required to identify and address the potential impacts of our business on cultural heritage values and archaeologically sensitive locations through the identification, recording and protection of these values and locations within our landholdings. This includes, wherever possible, working or partnering with cultural heritage stakeholders for the ongoing protection and management of cultural heritage.
We seek to avoid, or where avoidance is not possible, to minimise, restore or mitigate impacts on any identified places, values, items or other aspects of historical and cultural significance located within the area of influence of our industrial assets. We engage and work closely with and learns from relevant cultural heritage stakeholders and Indigenous Peoples for whom the cultural heritage has significance.
