About the role:

Reporting to the Manager Tailings, the Senior Engineer Advisor, Tailings is responsible as the qualified professional tailings engineer for stewardship of tailings and water retaining structures (TWRSs) across multiple sites leading ultimately towards successful and sustainable closure. This role focuses on, advising and assisting operational leadership to achieve TWRS objectives, and coordinating governance and stewardship needs with the TWRS leadership team, and the Engineer of Record.

To be successful in this role, we require a self-motivated individual with strong interpersonal and communication skills, who can collaborate and excel in a technical team-based environment; someone who has a demonstrated ability to influence others, and has strong time management skills.

In this role you will:

  • Participate in and adhere to health and safety programs and policies 
  • Work in compliance with regulatory requirements, HSEC Standards, GISTM, ICMM guidelines, and other relevant standards across the TWRS portfolio
  • Ensure Public Disclosure information is complete and available  
  • Engage on work scopes and performance expectations for Engineers of Record and Consultants for site tailings facilities
  • Provide direct support to site on quality and timing of governance, stewardship and risk oversight of TSF’s and water retaining structures
  • Report on performance including annual reporting to regulatory agencies
  • Provide updates to operating, maintenance, and surveillance manuals, emergency preparedness and response plans
  • Develop budgets and track costs on tailings related activities
  • Maintain conceptual closure plans
  • Ensure Construction vs Design Intent Verification (CDIV) process in place and used appropriately  
  • Mentor junior staff on routine dam inspections of the tailings facility and various site water dam structures, and support reporting on those inspections, and provide recommendations to the Engineering, Environment, and Processing groups  
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership on tailings management related issues  
  • Assist with any required public consultations 
  • Support long term tailings facility plans including mass balances, deposition plans and water balance 

Requirements:

  • Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Mining, or Geological Engineering, or equivalent
  • Significant geotechnical engineering experience (10+ years) in design, monitoring, performance analysis, reporting, and stewardship of tailings and/or water dams and structures with extensive practical experience
  • Registered, or immediately eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia
  • Understanding of tailings behavior, technologies, geotechnical investigation methods and analyses, soil mechanics, and surface and subsurface monitoring systems.
  • Experience working with external specialists, such as regulators and Engineers of Record, and familiar with tailings guidelines and regulations
  • Understanding of national and provincial regulations and legal requirements, permitting and legislative processes, and a broad knowledge of mining policy and best practice guidelines from the CDA, MAC, ICMM, and Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management
  • Experience with dam inspections including DSR’s and DSI’s is essential 
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
